How to Find a Job You Love in Graphic Design - DIGRAPE "Diseños Gráficos Peña" - http://digrape.com

Finding a job you love in graphic design is certainly possible if you know how to set your goals and priorities.  In order to get the ideal job, you must be able to know exactly what you want to get from your career in graphic design.  You have to know your priorities and be willing and able to define them.  This will give you the direction and confidence you need to get where you want to be.  Finding a job you love and graphic design should not be too difficult if you know how to define your ideal job, and you're willing to define your priorities.

How important is money to you?

This is a very important question that you should ask yourself regardless of where you want to work.  This can be difficult question to answer, especially if you are at the beginning of your career.  Certainly no one should ever expect to give away their talents and skills for free.  However, at the very beginning of your career, you may be expected to be a little more flexible.  After all, this is the stage of your career when you need to get the most hands-on experience.  Like a doctor who is starting a low salary internship straight out of graduation, you too must be willing to make a few allowances as you begin to get your feet wet.

Figuring out what a fair salary is to you

What constitutes a fair salary to you? This is an important question to ask yourself as you position yourself to enter the graphic design market.  This can be a particularly difficult question for many young graphic designers to answer, considering they're probably unfamiliar with market salaries.  It can be difficult to put a price on your talents and skills.  However, there are some ways to get an idea of what current salaries look like in the graphic design field. First, take advantage of the information you can get from your instructors.  They have firsthand knowledge of what local salaries for graphic design artists are in your area.  Your professors can probably tell you which segments of the graphic design industry pay the best.  It can be difficult to make a blanket assessment about the graphic design field.  This is because there is no union that sets wages.  In many cases however, you will not need to know exactly what you think your job is worth.  This is because most employers will tell you how much the job pays.  Most positions followi a certain budget, and carry a high and low figure.  If you have less experience, you can expect to be paid a round of low figure.

What segment of the graphic design market suits you best?

Perhaps the most important thing to keep in mind is which area of the graphic design field suits you best.  Let's say that you have a strong interest in advertising.  If this is the case, you'll want to do research to find out which advertising agency is responsible for your favorite ad campaigns.  This is a great and easy way for you to find a potential employer that does work that you respect.  If you don't happen to know which area of the industry intrigues you the most, you may want to consider applying for internships.  Let's say you enjoy music, but you also enjoy books.  You can try to find a company that combines these interests.  For instance, you can try working for a magazine that covers both books and music.

Location, location, location

Another important thing to keep in mind is the location of your job. Are you willing to move to New York for your shot at Madison Avenue, or do you think you would be more content working at your local newspaper?
